Wondering where Moqita has been the past few months? Billy's been working on his show that's coming up this Friday 3/3/06 at Space 1026. He and his brother Steven have been working like crazy to get this opening together. If you were at Billy's show at 1026 a few years back, or damn, if you've seen any of his gallery shows, you know this is going to be a night of high society hobnobbing, wine and cheese and rich people throwing money around for art that will look great with their new $20,000 couch.
Oh wait..I'm sorry.. I was reading the wrong notes. This is the Dufala's at 1026. It's going to be REAL Philadelphia artists showing amazing, thought provoking, often disturbing artwork. Billy will be serving food (last time it was roast turkeys with fake breast implants) and instead of the rich and famous, it'll be the talented and mostly dirty.
No Moqita live dates are in the works right now, but you can catch JG of Moqita DJing at "The Burial". There's all kinds of crazy Drum and Bass stuff in the main room with Ed Rush, Optical, Pendulum, Karl K, Kaos, Jae Kennedy, Sharpness, Illy MC but JG will be upstairs with his Pink Skull cohort, Julian S Process, and Art Cuebik. JG will be spinning his normal mixed bag of indie dance, disco punk, and lounge core. and lamp. He loves lamp.
The Moqita song "No More Sand In My Lip Balm" is featured on the new compilation CD "Om Lounge 10" on Om Records.
This show is going to be awesome. We're playing with three of the coolest bands in Philly. Poptronica, Electo indie, we tried to come up with a name for this little music fest but we feel that making up a new genre name doesn't do these bands justice. It's also a very special night as we'll be featuring vocal performances from Ashley Thomas, new songs sung by Billy Blaise and...wait for it...JG in his Moqita singing debut. Craziness.
Details:The show scheduled for tomorrow (thursday) has been CANCELLED.
BUT WE'RE STILL PLAYING! AND IT'S FREE!
Here's the deal:
According to the promoters of the show, King Britt and DJ Spooky had "scheduling conflicts" (kinda like "wardrobe malfunctions") and are unable to play tomorrow. We're not sure what that means but they cancelled the show. So... We talked to our good friends at Fluid and decided that we're just going to do a last minute night of funkyness. We're going to play our schduled set of mellow Moqita flavors at 9:00pm, like we were supposed to. Then we're going to play some records, get drunk, cause some mayhem and then come back on later on in the night to do a repeat of our dancey set that we played last month but with some more twists and turns and some new songs.
J.SMOOTH will be there djing and playing with us, ASHLEY THOMAS will be there singing away, and other special guests will be throwing down all night long. All in all, it'll be a good night of just chilling, hanging out, and having a good time. Oh and it's FREE to get in.
We're bummed that we don't get to see King Britt and DJ Spooky too, but
it's all good. Those two are all over the place and you can check out
where they're playing in the future at kingbritt.com and djspooky.com

DJ Spooky - that subliminal kid
DJ Spooky "weaves cultural and temporal streams together to create a vivid, shifting tapestry of flow. In so doing he stakes a powerful claim to the democratising powers of the mix." - BBC
"Morphs subtly between hip-hop abstraction and unalloyed free-improv exploration." - Entertainment Weekly
King Britt
"King Britt has dead cool taste. Featuring mantroniz-sized wooshes and dancefloor textures that track the deadly space from disco to House, Britt's productions are clean and impressive. Like necking in the back seat of the Delorian from Back to the Future." - The Wire (UK)
"A swirling fantasia of feel-good funk." -Entertainment Weekly
Moqita
"Imagine blending your moms jazz records with some of Greyboys beats, throw in some Philly soul flavor and dont forget the beatboxing flute and some live Wurlitzer keys. Moqitas live act is a combination between JGs knowledge of musical gadgetry and Blaises stunning self-taught musical ability to play the flute and piano at the same time. Yes, he only has two hands, but you'll have to see that for yourself." - Around Philly.com

Moqita Live @ Fluid Thurday 9/30
This is the big one. We're playing at the finest little club in Philadelphia and preparing special show just for this night. We're pulling out all the stops for this one. We'll start out with our usual smoothed out downtempo cuts and then ramp it up in the second half with a house flavored funk-fest. I mean, c'mon, like we're going to play Fluid and NOT rock the dance floor?!? Bring your dancing shoes and your drinking glasses... it's going to be a par-tay.
But wait, there's more! Also appearing will be special guest vocalist Ashley Thomas (she sings on 'round the way') and guest scratching and cutting from superstar DJ, and our main man, J.Smooth. Smooth will also be dj'ing a funky ass set to start out the night and our favorite house DJ, Carl Michaels, will closing it down with his trademarked brand of ass shaking beats. We'll be sandwiched in the middle like some sorta soulfunk sandwich.
We're also giving away tons of FREE cd's and other Moqita stuff so don't miss this show!

Moqita in the WKDU top 30 charts
Looks like our friends at WKDU 91.7 FM (the best radio station in philly) have been giving us some air play. We made #19 on the list, beating out DJ Shadow and RJD2 but just missed #18 on the list, getting beat down by "Humanure" by Cattle Decapitation. I mean, damn, who can compete with an album by a group called "Cattle Decapitation"?
UPDATE: We're up to #15..take that Cattle Decapitation!

Moqita Live @ UCAL (West Philly) Saturday 9/11
This is a really cool show. The Feedback Concert series is an interactive event where artists perform and then they have a short Q & A session after each set. If you have anything you've been dying to ask us, this is the place. This is a intimate venue where the focus is on the music. If you've seen us before and had to deal with bar chatter and noise, this will be a good place just to close your eyes and take in the music.
Also playing will be William Fields and A/D.
